How to Obtain a Letter from the Ethiopian Embassy for Shipping a Human Remains to Ethiopia?

The Government of Ethiopia depends upon Ethiopian Airlines to set the regulations for the transport of human remains. Ethiopian Airlines requires the following documentation to fly human remains to Ethiopia.

Required Documents

  • Death Certificate: Issued by the relevant authority.
  • Health Certificate: Confirms the body is free from any contagious diseases.
  • Funeral Home Letter: Verifies that the body is prepared for transport.
  • Valid Passport of the Deceased : If available.
  • Non-Passport Holders : If the deceased does not have a passport, you must obtain a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs granting permission for entry into Ethiopia.

Reviewing Process

Once the application is submitted, the Embassy will review your request. If all documents are complete and valid, the Embassy will issue the necessary letter and send it to you via email.

Print the letter in color to ensure its authenticity. And Present the printed letter as required for the body’s transportation process.

Important Notes

If your application is incomplete or missing documents, the Embassy will reject your request and notify you by email.

The most common reasons for rejection include:

  • Missing passport.
  • Passport does not indicate Ethiopia as the place of birth.
  • Not providing a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia for non-passport holders
